History
Built by the Japanese, engineered by their greatest, it was built to
out-perform and give you one hell of a ride going sideways!
The history of the 200sx isn't easy explained. For example: The
shape of the car which I have, called a 200SX in South Africa and most
of Europe, is known as the 240SX in America, and a 180SX in Australia,
although the specs in some countries differ greatly!
To make things a bit clearer, the car
originates from the Nissan Silvia, which was actually manufactured and
sold already in 1964!

(C)SP311:
I think it' was the first Silvia produced. Nissan's Chief
Designer, Mr. Ootake, named the car after a beautiful nymph in
the Greek Mythology. The name appears in Roman mythology.
I am told this
model was very much known as the Nissan 1600 Coupe. |

S10 |
S10:
In 1974 Nissan introduced their first modern Silvia with chassicode
S10. In the end of the seventies and the begining of the eighties,
two new models of the Silvia arrives, the S11 and the S110, both
without greater success. |

S12 |
S12:
The next model of the Silvia, the S12, was introduced in 1983. It´s
available as a coupé or hatchback. The model is called Gazelle in
many places but more known as the 200SX in the USA. In Japan the car
is poweres a twolitre engine named FJ20 or FJ20DE, while Europe
obtains the first modell of the CA18-engine. |

S13 |
S13:
During 1988 the first model of the S13 was introduced. Thid model is
called coupé and has many similarities with with the first swedish
200SX but does not come with the pop-up lights and is sold as sedan
or convertible. Under the bonet lies a CA18DE och a CA18DET engine,
that means a 1.8 litre engine with or without turbocharger, the same
engine you´ll find in the swedish 200SX from 1989 and on.
|
| The
model is later equiped with the SR20DE and the SR20DET engines, a
twolitre engine with or without turbocharger which are found in the
swedish model of the S14. In the US the car is sold with the KA24DE
engine, a 2,4 litre engine with 155 bhp. This coupé-model of the S13
was available with HICAS (4-wheelsteering) as an option in some of
the countries which the car was exported to. |

(R)S13

S14

S14a |
(R)S13:
During 1989 the hatchback-version of the S13 arrives, called the
RS13 to keep the modells separated. This is the model we know as the
200SX in Sweden. In Japan and Australia it is called 180SX due to
the 1,8 litre turbocharged engine and in the US the 240SX due to the
2,4 litre non-turbo engine. In Europe it came to be called 200SX for
some reason. In Sweden the car is exclusively sold with the
CA18DET-engine. In Japan the RS13 was manufactured and sold even
untill 1999. In the rest of the world the S13 was replaced when the
S14 was introduced 1994.

S14:
In fall 1994 the new model of the 200SX, S14, was introduced in
Sweden. In Japan and many other countries it came to be called the
Silvia, but Sweden stays with the name 200SX. The model is equiped
with the SR20DET-engine with 200 bhp. HICAS is only available in
Japan. In december of 1996 the model is facelifted which consist in
for example, a longer bonnet and headlights which narrows towards
the grill. This model is called the S14a or S141. In Sweden the S14
is only imported on demand. The model is available untill 1999/2000.

S15 |
S15:
I januari 1999 the S15 Silvia was introduced in Japan. The model is
available as Spec-S and Spec-R. Much of the chassiework is
inherrited from the R34 Skyline, but the engine is still the SR20DE
or the SR20DET allthough it´s now delivering 220 bhp (automatic
transmission) or 250 bhp (manual transmission). The S15 is allso
equiped with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The car is only manufactured
as lefthand driven and is therefore only sold in countries like
Great Brittain and Australia apart from Japan. |
S16:
Stubbern rumors tells that Nissan is now planning to built an S16
model. The model will probably be introduced during 2003 or 2004. We
hope that it will be available outside of Japan. |

Sil-80

Sil-1580 |
Oddities:
The Sil80 or Sil-eighty is a model of the S13 which Nissan sold in
Japan for a short period. The model i based on a 180SX, the model of
the S13 we swedes know as the 200SX, but has the front bumper of the
S13 Silvia, the coupé-model that is. The reason for building this
model in a limited edition was that Nissan had discovered that many
young japaneese drivers allready had built their own cars with this
particular design. In Japan the Silvia was more common than the
180SX wich made spareparts from krasched cars more accessible for
the Silvia. If you then accidently krasched your 180SX it was
obviously cheaper to buy and replace your old front bumper with one
from the Silvia.
Sil-1580 i offcourse a 180SX with a front bumper from The Silvia
S15. Many japaneese styling-companies now sell complete kits for
this. |
Australia:
Nissan introduced the S13 in Australia during 1988. The car was
available as coupé called the Silvia, as hatchback called 180SX and
allso as convertible. The hatchback-model is the one we know as the
200SX in Sweden. Between 1988 and 1991 the car was equiped with the
CA18DET-engine, the same found in the swedish S13. In the middle of 1991
the car was sold with the SR20DET instead, the same engine you´ll find
in the swedish S14.
S14 Silvia was introduced during 1993 in Australia. The engine is the
same as in the swedish S14, the SR20DET. The face-lifted model S14a was
introduced in 1997. In januari 1999 the S15 Silvia, which sadly never
came to Sweden, was introduced. The SR20DET engine is still used but has
been improved and is now delivering more power.
USA:
In the US the S13 is called the 240SX because of the 2,4 litre non-turbo
engine which was meant to be used in Nissan´s jeep´s on the american
market. The reason Nissan choose this engine instead of the 1,8 litre
turbocharged-engine is simply that they thought that the american people
rather wanted a larger non-turbo engine than a smaller turbocharged one.
The model was just as in Australia available as coupé, hatchback or
convertible.
If you ask for a 200SX in the US you will get a completely different
car. The model was introduced in 1995 in the US ans never reached
Europe. The car slightly reminds you of a Primera hatchback and was
equiped with the SR20DE engine. The car was actually based on the Nissan
Sentra, allthough this is a model that has never been sold in Europe.
In 1989 and 1990 the engine used is the KA24E with 12 valves and 140
bhp. In 1991 the KA24DE engine with 16 valves and 155 bhp was used.
0-100 km/h was managed in less than 8 seconds with the 155 bhp engine.
During 1997 the S14-model was introduced, but still with the
KA24E-engine.
By the turn of the year 1998/1999 the selling of the 200SX and 240SX
is seased in the US and the focus is aimed on the new Nissan 240Z which
is introduced during 2000.
Japan:
In 1988 the Nissan S13 was introduced under the name Silvia. It was then
equiped with the same engine as the European cars. The Silvia was
available as coupé or hatchback.
When the S14 was launched in 1994 it was allso given the name Silvia.
S13 was then renamed to 180SX as in many other parts of the world but
was rather soon available with the SR20DET engine. The name 180SX was
still kept allthough a bit missleading.
In 1999 the marketing of the S15 began in Japan. It replaces the S14
and carries the name Silvia on. |
